In an ambitious move to address one of the world’s most urgent challenges, the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), in collaboration with the Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change (IMHEN), VinUniversity, and IRD, hosted a comprehensive three-day Course and Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Climate Change from December 2–4, 2024. Set against the academic backdrop of VIASM in Hanoi, this hybrid event brought together experts, researchers, and aspiring young scientists in an interdisciplinary journey to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) in tackling climate challenges.
The event was designed to serve as both a learning opportunity and a collaborative forum, with activities ranging from fundamental lectures on AI to practical applications in environmental modeling, and culminating in a conference filled with expert-led sessions on pressing climate issues. With flood prediction and management taking center stage, the course focused on localized challenges in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, offering attendees the tools and insights necessary to contribute to real-world solutions.
The course featured lectures and hands-on sessions on AI methodologies, particularly in the context of flood modeling, population dynamics, and sustainable management of agricultural and aquatic systems. Renowned speakers such as Prof. Hồ Tú Bảo (VIASM), Dr. Lê Duy Dũng (VinUniversity), and Assoc. Prof. Nguyễn Ngọc Doanh (VinUniversity) shared their expertise, while researchers like Dr. Huỳnh Quang Nghi and Dr. Đinh Thị Hải Vân added practical perspectives from local contexts.
The conference portion broadened the scope, with presentations on interdisciplinary projects, real-world case studies, and collaborative dialogues between professionals in climate science, agriculture, hydrology, and AI. The audience, ranging from researchers and policy makers to students, engaged in knowledge exchange designed to inspire new approaches to sustainable development.
One of the primary objectives of the course was to equip participants with practical skills in AI technologies while fostering a deeper understanding of the dynamics of climate systems. Participants were encouraged to actively engage in discussions and apply their learning through collaborative exercises. This hands-on approach not only deepened technical knowledge but also cultivated a mindset of interdisciplinary problem-solving, which is critical in confronting climate change.
All attendees received certificates of participation, and access to a wealth of learning materials—including lecture slides, datasets, and case studies—through the official course resource page. A detailed event report captured the highlights and outcomes, and a gallery of visual content preserved the spirit of collaboration and innovation that characterized the event.
By the conclusion of the three-day event, participants left not only with greater technical expertise but with a renewed commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing global environmental challenges. With climate change demanding urgent and intelligent solutions, this pioneering initiative in Vietnam stands as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of AI when guided by scientific insight and human cooperation.
