Introduction

A European Union-funded initiative aimed at facilitating the agroecological transformation of farming systems in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. It focuses on enhancing resilience to climate change, environmental degradation, and other external shocks by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and strengthening adaptive capacities among stakeholders.

Time

2023–2027

Project Facts

  • Duration: April 7, 2023 – April 6, 2027
  • Funding source: European Union (DeSIRA Initiative)
  • Funding amount: €4.15 million
  • Principal investigator: Dr. Alexis Drogoul – International Joint Laboratory led by IRD
  • Field sites: Dong Thap, Kien Giang, and Tra Vinh provinces in the Mekong Delta

Objectives

  • Facilitate the development and implementation of supportive policies and frameworks for agroecological transformation
  • Establish and strengthen agroecological value chains (AEVCs)
  • Enhance adaptive learning and advisory systems for stakeholders

Focus areas

  • Agroecological Transition: Promote sustainable practices and reduce chemical inputs through diversified cropping and improved soil health.
  • Climate Resilience: Support adaptation to salinity, drought, and land degradation in vulnerable Mekong Delta zones.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Strengthen capacity of farmers, advisors, and institutions through participatory tools and inclusive learning platforms.

Methodology

  • Integrated Simulation Platform: Build a multi-scale model combining agroecological, socio-economic, and climate data.
  • Agent-Based Modeling: Simulate farming system transitions and policy scenarios across regions and timescales.
  • Participatory Tools: Develop visual simulations to explore trade-offs and guide decision-making.
  • Local Calibration: Align model inputs and outputs with real field data and feedback from Mekong Delta stakeholders.

Results

  • Operational modeling tools to support agroecological decision-making at local and regional levels
  • Improved capacity of institutions to design and monitor agroecological programs
  • Policy briefs and training materials for integrating AEVCs into Vietnam’s agricultural strategy
