On the morning of May 15 in Hanoi, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MÔIT) and Vingroup officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on urban air quality management and the promotion of green growth. This marks a strategic step forward in realizing Vietnam’s net-zero emissions commitment by 2050.
According to the agreement, over the next five years, both parties will implement a series of technological and policy-driven initiatives to:
- Monitor and publicize air quality data through the installation of automated monitoring stations equipped with internationally certified air quality sensors in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
- Develop Digital Twin and AI tools: Vingroup will provide digital twin models and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to simulate and analyze emission sources, supporting more effective environmental policy planning.
- Ensure transparent information: Collected data will be shared via the Environmental Department’s and Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment’s data centers. Digital screens in schools, hospitals, urban areas, and shopping malls will display real-time air quality information to raise public awareness.
“Air quality is becoming one of the most serious challenges to public health and the sustainable development of major cities,” emphasized Deputy Minister Lê Công Thành during the signing ceremony.
- Electrification of transportation: The ministry will develop policies favoring zero-emission vehicles and explore the creation of Low Emission Zones (LEZs) in major urban centers.
- Domestic carbon market: Both sides will collaborate to develop green construction projects eligible for carbon credits. Revenue from the carbon credit market will be reinvested into further green transition initiatives.
From Vingroup’s side, VinFast and its affiliate Xanh SM are committed to:
- Expanding electric vehicle (EV) production and distribution.
- Growing the EV charging station network.
- Integrating carbon credits from EVs, charging stations, green buildings, and renewable energy into ongoing and future projects.
- Vinhomes will lead the development of smart urban areas and integrate fine dust emission monitoring systems at construction sites.
- The Ministry will publish a green labeling standard for eco-friendly housing projects.
In collaboration with VinUni, Vingroup will also spearhead education and communication campaigns on:
- Green growth strategies
- Carbon market mechanisms
- Air pollution awareness
These activities aim to engage students, researchers, and the broader community in environmental sustainability.
This MoU, valid for five years, lays a solid foundation for impactful projects targeting improved air quality and green growth in Vietnam’s urban centers, reinforcing the country’s leadership in global climate commitments. Deputy Minister Thành affirmed that key departments—including the Environmental Department, Climate Change Department, and the Ministry’s Office—will coordinate closely with Vingroup’s subsidiaries to implement the agreement effectively.
“By fully leveraging science, technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation, we must walk hand-in-hand with the private sector for the benefit of our people and nation,” he concluded.
